Aztecs Shine in Recent Athletic Competitions

Soledad High School’s boys’ basketball, girls’ soccer and wrestling teams are all headed to the playoffs after taking home the title in their respective divisions last week. 

 

The Aztecs boys’ basketball team won the PCAL Santa Lucia Division on February 11, defeating Rancho San Juan 67-52 to improve to 11-1 in league play. Daniel Raso led the team with 22 points, while Jason Mendoza added 20 and Jorge Olivarria had 13. The team is on a 10-game win streak and will start the Central Coast Section playoffs on Friday, February 18.

 

The girls’ soccer team clinched the PCAL Cypress Division title on February 12 by beating Monterey. With the victory, the Aztecs improved to 8-1-1 in league play. They were led by Sophia Martel, who now has a school-record 49 goals. The winning goal was scored by Alexa Ruacho—in just her fourth-ever varsity game!  The girls’ soccer team will begin CCS Playoffs on Saturday, February 19. 

 

On February 9, the Aztec boys’ wrestling team clinched the PCAL Mission Division title. Elijah Melchor (140), Eric DeSantos (184), Chris Rubalcava (197) and Donn Greer (222) each won their respective weight classes. The team won with 165 points, besting second-place Christopher by 31. The Aztecs will move on to the CCS Championships February 18-19 at Watsonville High School.
