Playworks Reboot - New Program Implemented at Gabilan

Posted Date: 11/18/24 (9:05 PM)

Greetings Parents and Guardians,

Gabilan Elementary School is implementing Playworks!  See attached link for more info: https://www.playworks.org/ .  Today was day 1 of the Playworks reboot.  As we prepare to enter Day 2 of our Playworks Recess Reboot, your support and cooperation with the following changes will be greatly appreciated:

Systems to be introduced tomorrow, Tuesday, November 19th:

  1. Equipment

    • Please keep all equipment at home.

    • Our goal is to create an inclusive play culture, which includes limiting opportunities for exclusion via "home balls" or "class balls", by using community equipment.

  2. Games

    • New games will be implemented and/or revived across the playground, including the grass. New games to be introduced this week are Switch6 Lines Soccer, and Rock, Paper, Scissors Relay, and Hot Spots Basketball (if time permits).

    • 2 soccer areas and 1 large group game area will be coned off for students to utilize during their recess.  These areas will be set up in the main field.

  3. Boundaries + Visuals

    • Field games will be identified and marked with visual boundaries such as cones (grass) and chalk (blacktop).  Our goal is to encourage students to utilize and recognize game boundaries throughout their play space.

    • The track field will be temporarily closed for the week. Please remind students the track area will be closed. We would like to keep students in areas closer to the supervising adults to maintain their safety.

  4. Junior Coach Program

    • Gabilan Elementary's young leaders [4th, 5th, & 6th grade] have been recruited and trained.  These Junior Coaches will support safe and healthy play at 1st - 3rd grade morning recess (9:35 AM - 9:55 AM).

    • Junior Coaches will wear a yellow vest to distinguish themselves from other students.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact Mrs. Marisela Lara, Community School Coordinator and/or Ms. Olmos, Principal.
